Anyone else have some experience with these Rinnai instant-hot water heaters? Good or bad?
We had one installed a year ago for our water system and have had it worked on 4 times. They have tried to convince us that it is because our water is too hard and we need a softener before the heater but to install that is more than a new water heater. Our water is hard but we haven't had these issue with other traditional water heaters. My worry is I'll install the softener and still have issues and end up having to throw even more money at replacing it.

I had a couple issues with leaking heat exchangers early on but Rinnai respected the warranty and it was free of charge. They keep up with my clinics use and the water is hot. Are you with Big F? They have a wonderful partnership now where Rinnai has a 24 hr support line.

They have been fairly good with trying to replace parts but if you have hard water stay away!!! My incoming calcium is at 79 mg/L, sure it is hard but not the hardest I've seen at all. Flushing the unit monthly, we have had to replace the heat exchanger twice in a year and have had the unit worked on even more because it gets clogged with calcium deposits. We are now spending more on a softener than we did on the water heater in order to keep the water heater running.

We have 2 at one of our clinics that had issues with leaking heat exchangers early on but have since been good to us. Our hardness is a good bit higher than your at 7 gpg (120 mg/L) and don't have a clogging problem. At 79 mg/L I wouldn't even consider that as "hard".
Is your gas or electric? If electric, have you checked your anode rod?

I'm with Big F and have 4 Rinnai units and been having trouble with 3 of the units dedicated to the water room December 2022. Rinnai has been horrible to work with. Our units are only 2 years old but finally after 3 months of continuous issues, the parts were still under warranty but the original company that installed them warranty ended and they wouldn't come back to work on them. We had to pay another plumbing company to have 3 of the heat exchangers replaced and they said they won't work on them any more either and recommended just replacing them all with commercial grade Navien units or switch to Cyclone tank water heaters.

Why are you working with anyone but the 24/7 Rinnai emergency line? They’ll provide the vendor.
