I have tried a myriad of products to keep the drains clear of smell and organic funk. Our machines goto a drain in the wall box then that drain line goes to an open drain sink in the floor. There are 3-4 machines per drain sink. I can not find anything that can keep up with the amount of goo that forms in the sink.
I have tried enzymes, I have tried bleach, I have tried little flapper valves in the drain, I have tried products + toilet brush scrubbing them.
Please share any and all secrets you have to keep this nasty under control

Buildup to me seems inevitable so I will love to see what others say. That being said, We use a drain foam with a sprayer from RPC and then afterwards pour a mint scented drain membrane that forms a film on top of the surface of the drain water. That works good at keeping the bugs in check and slows the buildup. As far as cleaning the buildup when it forms, I have a quick connect attached to a hose with a tubing connector on the other end(xmas tree)which increases pressure. I attach it to the valve that the dialysis machines plug into and spray the drain box in the floor and that breaks it up then I flush the drain really well. If you do 1 or 2 a week and rotate it should be fine. I used to do it during the loop heat disinfect but we do ozone now so I do it whenever I have time.

Best thing I've found is a mixture of about 25% industrial strength Drain-O Gel to 75% the warmest water you can access in a pump sprayer rated for bleach. Hit your drains and floors sink with it, and the combined pressure, heat and Drain-O will eat through it.

found that 100% drain gel only turns the mel blue, found that 100% bleach working back and forth thru drain lines instantly dissolves the mel then !00% bleach soaked in a round scrub brush down the drain lines get rid of the mel there, we have also found that endozyme from ideal supplies also works well

We had a plumber reposition the line so that the liquid drops straight into the drain hole instead of splattering. Also downsized the tailpiece to 1" with the end cut at a sharp angle so that there isn't any dribble around the end of the pipe.

Have you tried dwelling it in some straight Minncare? We had that problem at one of our clinics where the drain boxes go to a stainless bowl at floor level. The nasty stuff that began growing in there was the stuff of Clive Barkers works.
We dumped some Minncare on it at the end of the day and let it dwell and it seemed to help.
There was also a product our Home Hemo used for their drains called D'Stroy. Worked GREAT! Not sure which is more expensive though, Minncare or D'Stroy….

With both Minncare and bleach make sure you ventilate the floor well and flush the drains with water before patients are back on the floor. I had a on call issue once where the biomed dumped a bunch of bleach down the drains the night before and the floor smelled strong of bleach the next morning. The staff tested the machines with the residual and it came back high, I asked them to test the loop return and they said it was high. Turned out the fumes were causing the reaction and instead of checking loop return they checked the last machine on the loop. It delayed treatments for hours while we got a tech there and figured it out. We mostly use minncare and bleach. The CWP always has a little extra at the bottom of the jug and we store off site all expired minncare we come across to use on the drains. We also dump extra bleach from time to time down the drains.

EZ drain gel by RPC once a month and wall boxes and drains are sprayed out every evening with vinegar. Seems to work. We've never had a problem with build up, odor or drain flies.

we sealed our floor drains up no need for an air gap in your floor drain if you've got one at each station.. but obviously you want to check with your local City county State Plumbing code to be sure it's okay.. we also installed ball valves at each end in case we do have an issue we can close them up and fill with disinfectant and flush out.. but have not had to do that in 3+ years

The thought being that if the drain backs up, it can't come back into the machine.

yes...but our wall boxes have their own individual air gap.. no need for a second one on the trunk line.. but again you need to check with your local plumbing ordinances

So, iv been using the products supplied by Epione Systems ( drain pucks, the sachets, and the wall box cleaner you mix up) and it's had a very good impact. I realize a lot of folks aren't Fresenius, and that might not be an option, but for the ones who are, it's in r2p under facility management --->related catalogs---->epione systems.
prior to using the Epione stuff, I usually mixed up a batch of CLR pro-Bio-enzymatic drain cleaner every week, and tbh it worked pretty well over the long term.

Delta Products makes a product called Drain Caine. Smells like candy canes! Works great for the smell. They also have a gel air freshener that people seem to like. I use Elimishield. Need to install automatic pumps at each drain and replace gallon jugs at end of each month but it automatically squirts an enzyme down the drain every night. If you want to order the Delta products items call Shana @267-515-7300 Delta Products.
