We have soaked tools in citric acid 50% and it cleans them up nicely. I have done this with vinegar. Takes the rust off then rinse with RO to get the acid off. Then spray and wipe with WD40 silicone version. Leaves a nice patina

I usually soak mine in RO H2O for a while and hand-dry them. Then I spray with a silicone spray, wipe and put away. I like them to sit in the water over the weekend if possible. I think I would be afraid to try that. Purified water is supposed to be aggressive, but I have never put it to the test on dirty tools.
I can't speak to leaving them in it for weeks/months, but a couple days seems to work well. Been doing it with the same tools for a few years now. Usually a few times per year.
Never tried the Citric. When/if we start using it again I might just try it. We use Acetic right now and I might as well go ahead and throw my tools away if I use that...lol

What % Acetic are you using? Vinegar is I believe 4% so I wouldn't think its anymore than that?

I Like the Citric Acid opinion and will try it out, I have been utilizing a degreaser in an heated ultrasonic cleaner here at the hospital and it worked really well . I will usually utilize it on a Saturday night of Sunday and then I use the Dry Silicon spray for locks .

I had to CONSTANTLY change out wall box connections because they were rusting/breaking. Turned out the staff were spraying everything down with vinegar (when they actually did THAT much). I got them a bunch of spray bottles and an easy way to fill them with RO water...breaks down just about everything and leaves nothing behind!
