Blood will normally start making its way into the syringe if the pump isn't activated at all over the course of the treatment by diffusion. Seen it many times as a PCT. If it's filling with blood more than the amount of heparin that was originally in the syringe then I would look check to make sure the latch is properly engaged and isn't able to be moved up or down when latch is closed. If it does then there may be some buildup in the latch portion not allowing it to close fully, or it could be on the metal part itself that's not allowing it to close all the way. If the latch seems okay then I would go through the process in the PM procedure to check the functionality of the pump. Make sure it's not throwing any alarms and that it's pushing the correct amount. (starts on page 34 of PM procedure manual)
