Bad managers keep people trapped in dead-end jobs.
Good managers create oppurtunities for people to grow and advance.
Great managers encourage people to pursue growth and advancement even it means leaving for another organization.

I read the title and thought, "Isn't it a little early to be talking about Christmas?"

Growth and advancement is no ones responsibility but your own! Now if you lack self motivation to learn and grow, I as a manager would surely encourage you to leave for another organization.

It could probably have been worded differently. A good manager should make sure that you are aware of the roadmap to success for any goals you might have, and should also be supportive of growth. Yes, the individual is ultimately responsible for what they do with that information and path.

I agree to some extent but I will say one thing. I had a manager who wouldn’t get me answers, wouldn’t get me training. I had to depend on myself, 0 support from them. Result I was largely self taught as a biomed so I know more than most biomeds because I went through the manuals line by line. On the flip side I have also put myself in a bad position from time to time because not everything is in a manual. I got a new manager and it was night and day. I ask a question now and I get answers. Down side is sometimes I rely on them too much, but I don’t doubt that I would have made it to a higher level quicker with a good manager.

Instead of expecting things to be handed to you on a silver platter, you ask for what you want or need.

Some really good points are being made. Relying too much on management is never a good idea, and not having supportive management is never a good thing either.
