What is required (by CMS) to be able to check water, mix bicarb and acid? Our unit is short staffed and the idea was thrown out about hiring a CNA to bring patients in, weigh them, get vitals, stock supply carts, etc. If they were trained on mixing and checking of the water, could these jobs be assigned to them? I have looked through guidelines and can’t really see anything that says it is specific to a CCHT or Biomed or RN. It does use the term “trained”. It is a good idea in theory, I just want to make sure we are following guidelines. We can change policies to accommodate.

Staff must be trained, tested, and skills documented. it does not have a specific job designation assigned. As long as you have some type of training program, a written test, and a skills checklist showing proficiency anyone can check water, mix bicarb and acid. You won't get a nurse to do it, they have enough to do and are hard to come by (shortage). Majority of centers do have CCHT's open facilities. Be aware that if someone's initials or signature is on a log, when auditors come they must be able to answer questions
