What are your soldering iron recommendations? Preferably available through grainger. I have a good soldering iron station setup at my clinics, but I'm looking for an iron for my on-call bag

Milwaukee M12 soldering iron? I haven’t tried it yet but it’s worth a shot for portability.

Milwaukee M12 soldering iron? I haven’t tried it yet but it’s worth a shot for portability. I have the M12 soldering iron and it takes a very long time to heat up enough to flow. I can only solder 3 joints before needing a fresh battery. It is very light duty and in my opinion just not strong enough if you plan on using it frequently. I haven't found anything I really like from grainger. Maybe others have had better luck than myself.

Really? That’s a bummer. What size battery are you using for that? 2.0?

Really? That’s a bummer. What size battery are you using for that? 2.0? Yes it's a 2.0. I was very disappointed. I purchased it in hopes it would help me in my Acutes. I don't have a technical area in either of the locations. So I was hoping the portability of a battery operated model would be beneficial. It slows me down more than finding an outlet and sitting on the floor to replace brushes. Bummer, hopefully others have found something better.

Did you ever think about carrying rebuilt motors with you and replacing the brushes back in your tech lab? I prefer to do that to trying to replace brushes in the field.

What about one of the butane-powered irons? I use one at home when working on vehicles.

I carry a long line of Milwaukee items so hopefully a larger battery would help in this case, like a 4.0 or 6.0 but again… this is a tool I don’t need but should have.

The problem I found with the more portable ones is that they are under powered and couldn't melt an ice cube in summer. Grant these were already in the clinic and the cheapest tool won the approval. It can solder all machine things. www.grainger.com/product/WELLER-Station-5JH84

I dislike most Ryobi tools since the lithium batteries are garbage, but Ryobi one+ soldering irons are great for traveling programs. you have 2 to chose from P3105 smaller more compact and the P3100 which has heat control and is an ac hybrid. I have the 3105 it Heats up fairly quickly states it reaches 900F. I find it to do the job. I have no problem soldering the hard and soft brushes on the 2008 FMC machines just remove the 2 torx bolts on the rear housing of the motors clean and re-solder the new brushes on and I'm done, no more removing the full motor and gear head from the machine. you may not find them at Grainger. But Home Depot and Amazon carry them.

I bought an Auto Zone $6 iron about 7 yrs ago. Still going strong.
Also have an "antique" but won't leave that one at work.

M12 is by far the best I have used. The XC 6.0 batteries are worth the money. Anything below a 3.0 battery isnt worth it with this tool. I have 2 of these and they never let me down.
