I know this topic has been discussed a few times before, and I'm hoping Chuck will chime in as I know he has experience with this. We use BBraun machines, and we are finally fed up with Phoenix meters. We are thinking strongly of switching to test strips. I assume you all use RPC's test strips for this. Those of you that use strips, what is the best way to collect your dialysate sample? Do you use a syringe to draw it out of the sample port and then expel that into a med cup? Do you pull the blue dialyzer coupling off and fill the med cup (I'm not sure how the surveyors would view this method)? Have you ever had any pushback from a state surveyor for not testing conductivity/temperature or for your sampling method? Thank you for the information.

We use the RPC strips that have the range of 6.8-8.5, I don't know the part number. We collect from the sample port when the machine is "Rinsing with UFP". We initially had pushback by surveyors about checking conductivity. I showed them in AAMI as well as their own guidelines that testing conductivity is up to manufacturer recommendation. I also have a letter from Braun stating that they do not recommend it that I will attach. As far as testing temperature, there is no requirement that I am aware of for doing it, unless your policy says to do it. The surveyor also questioned our policy of not testing for residual citric acid. Braun has since clarified that in their manuals. It's amazing (and infuriating) that surveyors (and staff sometimes) think that just because Fresenius and/or Davita do something, that's the way it has to be. Not Testing Conductivity.pdf (180.38 KB)

Hi Chuck! Is there any way you can send that letter you received from Braun about discouraging Phoenix testing vs using strips? I clicked on the link you attached to your previous response but it says its unavailable. We are trying to find documentation to prove we don't need Phoenix meter testing anymore with the BBraun Dialog Dialysis Machines. I am attaching my email. Thank you!!

If you didn't get it check your spam folder. Some email systems don't like us for some reason.

Hey Yoda, could you send me that Phoenix/strip documentation also?
