What salt pellets are used in the water treatment rooms? I am looking to order salt to refill our brine tank; however, I am aloof as to which one to get. I see potassium chloride pellets, those for rust prevention, coarse grade and some with acids 'impregnated' into the pellets. We are told to get bags from one company, but the minimum order is for 63 40lb bags. We are a small unit, so space for storage is limited. What is/are the most common salt pellets to safely use?

You definitely don't want the potassium chloride pellets! This is what we use from Rockwell: Prior to this, we used what Fresenius sells, I believe it was Morton but I'm not certain. If you don't already order from Rockwell or Fresenius, Home Depot is always an option. The key thing is that you want Sodium Chloride "pellets", not crystals.

We had a home dialysis patient who used potassium chloride in her water softener. Don't do that.
Chuck is right about pellets. I think it comes down to what you can transport to your unit. If nobody has a truck or is willing to use their own vehicle, Home Depot is not an option.
This is from AAMI 23500:
A water softener might be needed to prevent calcium and magnesium from forming scale on the membranes of a reverse osmosis system. For water with a high level of hardness, removal of calcium and magnesium with a softener can be necessary if the reverse osmosis system is to produce dialysis water that meets the requirements of 4.2.2 for calcium and magnesium. A softener typically is not needed to support a deionization system. Softeners should be regenerated or exchanged on a regular basis. Only sodium chloride should be used to regenerate a softener. Potassium chloride should not be used for softener regeneration. Also, salt designated as rock salt should not be used for regeneration since it is not refined and typically contains sediments and other impurities that might damage O-rings and pistons and clog orifices in the softener control head.
Fresenius can deliver with your weekly order.
