I'm looking to shed light on a topic of discussion. What CMS, Federal, and other regulations stipulate that a Pediatric patient cannot recieve dialysis while an adult is in the same area/facility. eg: 8 room dialysis dept in a pediatric hospital - can an adult pt recieve dialysis while a pediatric pt is in proximity? If not, can somebody state where the guidelines, rules, laws, etc state this?

never heard that...but it makes sense really. the setup is totally different, how the machine runs, blood lines, dialyzer, everything...makes sense they want that to be specialized. kind of like how you have dialysis nurses and er nurses and icu nurses...icu and er nurses can float to any floor really but a cardiac nurse or a med surg nurse can't go to er or icu (well can but don't), they certainly can't go do dialysis (unless they have the certifications)
the fresenius machines had different blood line options so you could select smaller diameter lines...but I don't recall if the pcts could select this or if you had to change it in service mode. I know I can change the blood line option on a bbraun and diameter but in service mode so I don't believe it's changeable in hemo mode.
Also, this will vary from state to state and from facility to facility...you'll need to be at least state specific but even that won't REALLY answer your question, your companies/hospitals policy will also need to be known

Currently I work in a 4 station facility for pediatrics and we have 2 indviduals that have been here since under the age of 18 now they are passed 18 and still here, because of doctor's orders. Lately though I rumor has it that they will soon have to be moved to adult centers.
